Someone sent me a random payment on Square and now refuses a refund — what's going on?
Treat it as a scam in progress. An unexplained payment landing in your Square account — usually from a stolen card — is the overpayment con: the “buyer” will soon claim it was a mistake and demand you send the difference back, wire money, or ship goods, right before the original charge reverses as fraud and Square claws the funds back out of your balance. Don't send anything back and don't ship anything. Contact Square support directly through the app to flag the payment as suspicious, and expect the original charge to be disputed by its real owner — the money isn't yours to keep or return.
