I was told I won a prize but have to pay taxes or fees first — is it a scam?
Yes. Real sweepstakes and lotteries never require payment to release a prize — taxes on a genuine win are settled with the IRS when you file, never prepaid by wire, gift card, crypto, or courier to the “prize” organization. The congratulatory call, the official letterhead, and the small fee standing between you and a fortune are the entire costume. If you have to pay to collect, there is no prize — and if you never entered, there was never a drawing.
